Sustenhorn from Steingletscher
An impressive and popular peak, Sustenhorn is the largest mountain above Sustenpass and glaciated on both sides. The glacier has many crevasses, both on the steeper lower section, and the upper section. Care is needed, particularly in early winter when the crevasses are not fully filled with snow, Many parties choose not to rope up, but anyone who has been there in summer and seen the number and depth of the crevasses will probably want to!
Usually climbed on skis from Steingletgscher. Depending how far the pass has been cleared of snow, it may be necessary to ski some of the way from Gadmen to Steingletscher.
From Steingletscher go past the Steinsee and go round the right hand side of the Chüebergli to reach the glacier. Continue to the foot of the steep glacier wall. Avoid this by a long traverse right and steeply back left to reach the flatter section that leads to Tierberglihütte. From here take the route to the upper glacier, and reach the summit breathlessly by a long curving route that leads to the easy summit ridge.
