Lidernenhütte - Blüemberg
An attractive and challenging mountain; what Blümberg lacks in size, it makes up for in quality. The mountain is accessible from the delightful Lidernenhütte, but does not give itself up easily, with a challenging traverse, and the last few meters on foot. If conditions are not good it is best left for another day due to the risk of avalanche and difficult navigation in poor visibility. The descents however are beautiful, whether back to Käppeliberg, as described here, or all the way down to Muotathal. There is often insufficient snow for the latter early and late in the season.
From Schwyz, follow the east side of Urnersee as far as the "chicken village" of Sisikon, and turn left here on a narrow road that leads up Riemenstadlertal to the small gondola at Käppeliberg. This will take you up to Lidernenhütte. There is a decent amount of parking at Käppeliberg, but the area is popular so it is worth arriving early.
Take the path from the top of the gondola to Lidernenhütte (10 minutes), and continue east, north of the imposing buttress of Schmal Stöckli. Continue in an easterly direction to reach the foot of the steep northern ridge of Chaiserstock. As an interesting variation it is possible to go south from here, or more directly from the hut to the small col below the summit of Liderner Plänggeli, with fine views to the south. Return to the foot of Chaiserstock, where there is an intimidating traverse at about 1970m to go round the ridge. The traverse is steep (40 deg) and should only be done in good conditions (harscheisen useful). Continue now in an easterly, then south easterly direction to reach the bowl between Blüemberg and Chronenstock. Climb steeply to a ski depot at the top of the bowl. remove the skis and do the last few tricky metres on foot with the help of a fixed rope. If you remembered to bring your skis with you, it is possible to descend either all the way to Muotathal, or by keeping west of Rupperslauistöckli back to Riemenstaldnertal. Otherwise, return to the ski depot and descend directly to the Riemenstaldner Tal and follow this west back to Käppeliberg.
